Athens has been recognized as one of the 100 Best Cities in the World for 2025 by a leading consultancy specializing in tourism, real estate, and economic development.
This acknowledgment comes as part of the 10th edition of the World’s Best Cities Report, which ranks the Top 100 cities globally. The rankings are determined through a blend of core statistics and user-generated data sourced from platforms like Google, Tripadvisor, and Instagram. These insights provide a comprehensive evaluation of a city’s quality of place, particularly its experiential offerings.
In the latest rankings, Athens slipped from 48th in 2023 to 87th in 2025, with the decline attributed to challenges in sustainable infrastructure and a reduction in perceived attractiveness. Despite this drop, the report celebrates Athens as “Europe’s new It City” due to its ambitious developments. Highlights include waterfront projects such as Ellinikon, the expansion of metro lines connecting diverse neighborhoods, and the transformation of historic buildings into vibrant cultural hubs.
Notable city-center landmarks include the ancient Municipal Market of Kypseli, now hosting community events, concerts, and workshops, and the Olympia Municipal Musical Theater, which occupies the former National Opera building. These developments underscore Athens’ evolving cultural and social landscape.
Among Athens’ top experiences are the lively Exarcheia neighborhood, the National Gallery, and the revitalized Grand Promenade. This 2.5-mile, tree-lined, car-free path at the base of the Acropolis links key archaeological sites, offering visitors an immersive historical journey. The city also ranks impressively in specific categories, holding 24th place for Biking and 28th for Sights & Landmarks. The Athens Olympic Museum in Maroussi stands out as a significant attraction, celebrating the city’s rich Olympic heritage.
Earlier in 2024, Athens was also recognized as Europe’s 50th best city in an annual report dedicated to Europe’s finest urban destinations.
Globally, cities like London, New York, and Paris lead the rankings, praised for their sustainable lifestyles, career opportunities, and technological advancements. Other top contenders include Tokyo, Singapore, Rome, Madrid, Barcelona, Berlin, and Sydney.
As the world faces economic challenges and geopolitical tensions, cities are increasingly focusing on sustainability, innovation, and livability to enhance the well-being of their residents. Post-pandemic shifts, including remote work and the demand for affordable housing, have further highlighted the importance of fostering vibrant and inclusive urban spaces. Additionally, governmental priorities like reshoring, energy independence, and food security are shaping resilient, forward-thinking economies essential for the future of cities worldwide.
